Chance meeting
Every now and then, something delightfully unusual happens in our world that we enjoy sharing with our readers. A chance encounter with a group we would never expect to see on a quiet side street in North Scranton set the stage for one of those stories.
We were a bit startled last week when a bus pulled up in front of the house and half a dozen enthusiastic people hopped out and fired up their cameras. Clicking away, we asked them if we could offer any assistance. They explained they had traveled to Scranton from Wales, and they wanted a few photos of a home that had been in their family. They were looking for the Jones home.
After a few minutes of lovely conversation, we learned that this wasn’t simply a group of tourists— this was a group of talented singers. They were professional musicians set to perform on Saturday night as part of the entertainment lineup for the North American Festival of Wales. The festival was held last week at the Hilton Scranton, Elm Park United Methodist Church, and other venues in the Electric City.
They were so charming, we hated to tell them that our home wasn’t the Jones home. But we were able to help them find the house they were looking for, and we truly enjoyed our chance meeting, and we hope our Welsh friends enjoyed their stay in the Electric City.

Tasty tour
In other news, we have the perfect way to spend Saturday night if you’re looking for something different, and delicious. Members of the Greater Scranton Jaycees are going on tour — a dining tour, that is. And you don’t have to be a member to join in the fun.
An annual tradition for the group, the Jaycees’ Circuit is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 8. Volunteer co-chairs Beth Schechner and Tim O’Malley have organized a fun evening of food and drinks. A luxury limo bus will tour a number of local restaurants and bars. Here’s the scoop on the itinerary for the evening: at 5:30 p.m., friends will gather at the Scranton Club, on the corner of Mulberry St. and North Washington Ave. in downtown Scranton. At 6:30 p.m., the bus departs from the Scranton Club and, in the next five hours, guests will enjoy food and drinks at Dawn’s Ruby Room in Peckville, the YKnot in Elmhurst, La Tonalteca in Clarks Summit and Stalter’s Café in Scranton, with the tasty tour ending at Whiskey Dick’s in downtown Scranton.
Tickets are $30 for members of the Jaycees and $35 for non-members. All proceeds benefit the 20th Annual Greater Scranton Jaycees’ Santa Parade. For the cost of your ticket, you’ll enjoy free food at each stop, discounted drink specials and one free raffle ticket. Think Pink
You may see many people sporting pink shirts and accessories this weekend at two different fundraisers: the Drink to Pink Happy Hour at Midtown Sports Bar & Grill in Dupont on Friday night, and the Race for the Cure on Saturday in downtown Scranton.
Proceeds from Drink to Pink will benefit the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walker. The Happy Hour, hosted by friends of the American Cancer Society, will be held on Sept. 7, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Midtown Sports Bar. The event will feature drink specials, live music and raffle baskets. Admission is $5 (although you may donate more if you wish). On Saturday, runners and walkers will fill downtown Scranton for the annual Race for the Cure hosted by the Susan G. Komen Foundation. You may register as an individual, or as a team, in advance or on Saturday. (For complete registration information, visit www.komen.org). Registration on the day of the event opens at 6:30 a.m., with runners heading to the starting line at 8:15 a.m. and walkers starting at 8:20 a.m.
