The Scoop

EDITOR JULIE IMEL DISHES THE NEWS YOU NEED TO KNOW

Happy B-Day, Rock 107!
Did you get your tickets to Rock 107’s 32nd Birthday Bash yet? The big party is Thursday, April 5, at the Woodlands Inn and Resort, and it’s one you won’t want to miss. This year, northeastern Pennsylvania’s Home of Rock ’N Roll is celebrating with a performance by Great White, featuring co-founder Mark Kendall (guitar), and 28-year-veterans Michael Lardie (guitar, keyboards) and Audie Desbrow (drums). They will be joined by lead singer Terry Ilous and bassist Scott Snyder. Best known for the 1989 smash “Once Bitten, Twice Shy,” Great White’s worldwide sales are approaching 10 million. Their song arsenal also includes “Rock Me,” “Save Your Love,” “The Angel Song,” and “Mistabone.”
In addition, Great White, Flaxy Morgan, Mr. Echo, Kock 107, and Graces Downfall will rock the night away. Our Rock 107 peeps tell us that there will be plenty of food, including a huge birthday cake, in the Grand Ballroom. You must be 21 to enter the Birthday Bash.
Rock 107 has been giving away free tickets for weeks on the air at 106.9, 105.9 and 107.3 FM, and you’ll have one last chance to grab them at Motorworld on Thursday at 4 p.m.
Tickets will also be available at the door on the night of the show for $15.

Get real
This is a great week for party animals. You can live it up with Rock 107 at their Birthday Bash on Thursday night and then mix and mingle with a reality television star on Friday night. If you’re a fan of reality television, you won’t want to miss your chance to meet Deena Nicole Cortese of Jersey Shore on Friday, April 6 at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs. She’ll greet fans and sign autographs  starting at 8 p.m. on the Sky Bridge. There is no charge to attend this event, and you may even catch a glimpse of this her later in the evening when she stops by Breakers as part of Diva Fridays. Time to STRETCH
Switching gears now, let’s call upon all the illustrators, designers and artists out there. We’ve come across a great opportunity for you to hone your design skills with some of the industry’s greatest talents: the STRETCH Creative Conference at Marywood University. The conference will be held on Saturday, April 14, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Latour Conference Room of Nazareth Hall.
Guest speakers include Anita Kunz, who has illustrated cover art for Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, Sports Illustrated, Time and Newsweek, to name a few;  Chip Kidd, a graphic designer and writer in New York City whose book jacket designs have helped start a revolution in the art of American book packaging; and author and designer Craig Yoe, who has been a creative director for Disney, Nickelodeon , MTV and the Muppets. The registration deadline is April 6. To register or for more information, visit mu-art.org/stretch for more information and how to register.

Zine Fest returns
Has it really been a year since we talked with Jess Meoni, who organized the Scranton Zine Fest in the city’s downtown? It’s hard to believe how fast this year has gone by, and how much every aspect of the local writing community has grown. More and more literary events are popping up, and we just love it! The Scranton Zine Fest is a prime example, as it will return even bigger and better on June 9. Thirty participants have signed up so far, and they include zinesters as well as artists. This year’s event will also feature Pittsburgh slam poet, William James. To learn more, visit scrantonzinefest.wordpress.com.
That’s the scoop! Thanks for reading and I’ll meet you here again next week.
