Support your Superheroes
Characters For A Cause is a fundraising group based in Scranton that shows you don’t have to be a real-life superhero to make a super positive impact in this world. The group has participated in mud run races such as the Warrior Dash and Run for Your Lives, and has held fund raisers and auctions with 100 percent of proceeds going directly to various charities. Members of the group host and compete in these events dressed as characters from comic books, video games, movies, and other media. The group was started by Mike Watts, Matt Wheeler, and Keith Wojciechowski, after Watts and Wojciechowski participated in the Warrior Dash in June of 2012 dressed in character as Spider-Man and Wolverine, subsequently raising $250 for United Neighborhood Centers.
On Saturday Aug. 10, Characters For A Cause will have a Super Hero Day at Comics On The Green (307 N. Washington Ave., Scranton). There will be a number of heroes and villains available for free pictures with fans. Information for pledging a character in an upcoming race will be available.
Characters For A Cause will have 16 comic book characters running in the Warrior Dash on Saturday, Aug. 24, and raising money for the Child’s Play charity. An after party at The Keys (244 Penn Ave., Scranton) will rock on after the race featuring live music, drink specials, raffles, a costume contest and screenings of comic book movies. The big ticket raffle item will be a Spider-Man mask signed by Stan Lee (the creator of Spider-Man and many other comic book characters), with a certificate of authenticity.
