The Scoop

EDITOR JULIE IMEL DISHES THE NEWS YOU NEED TO KNOW

Welcome to 2013
The holidays are behind us, and now it’s time to shift our focus from cookies and parties to well…
Oh, who am I kidding? Cookies just make everything better and I see no reason to limit the number of parties in our lives, especially when there’s a whole lot of fun to be had this month. So don’t get caught up in post-holiday blahs — check out some of what’s coming your way in The 570, and get out there!

First Friday is upon us
It’s been quite some time since Scranton hosted a First Friday celebration in January, and we’re pleased to let you know that the popular event will be in full swing on Friday night. If you need help making a plan for the evening, be sure to check out the First Friday map on page 21. Enjoy!

Excuse me, are those dance pants you’re wearing?
Local fans of The Push are loving their annual Christmas present from Tim McDermott and Jim Reynolds (aka The Push)— the release of Dance Pants. If you haven’t seen the video yet, check it out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hO-giUMauA. When last we checked, Dance Pants had more than 15,000 views. If you haven’t picked up your tickets yet for the release party of The Push’s Greatest Hits Volume One, you better act soon. Tickets for the concert, which will be held in partnership with The Vintage Theater, are selling quickly and there will be a limited number available at the door. The concert will be held on Saturday, Jan. 5, from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. at TwentyFiveEight Studios, 703 N. Washington Ave. (rear). For tickets, visit http://thepushrock.brownpapertickets.com/. And don’t forget, attire is casual, but dance pants are a must – sequins optional.

Best Of Bash
You can party with The Push in Scranton on Saturday, and then beat the mid-week blues with the electric city and diamond city family at Breakers at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs.  We’re  honoring the winners of our Best Of Readers’ Poll on Jan. 9, from 7 to 9 p.m. The party is open to those age 21 and older. We look forward to kicking off the new year with all of you!

The POWER! of marketing
POWER! Scranton is partnering with John Baldino, an expert in digital and social media, on Tuesday, Jan. 15, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Lackawanna College’s Mellow Theater in Scranton. Baldino’s seminar titled “Networking 101: Marketing Yourself in Person and Online” is the first in a series of free lectures offered by POWER!. Following the lecture, guests will enjoy a special cocktail hour where they can put their new skills to use. The event is free to POWER! and Rediscover Scranton members; and $10 for non-members. All proceeds will benefit First Friday of Scranton. Registration is strongly encouraged as space is limited.  For more information and to register, visit baldinoonline.com or contact Jennie Garelli via jennie.garelli@gmail.com.

20 Minutes & A Beer
Members of the American Advertising Federation (AAF) will host 20M&AB (that’s short for 20 Minutes & A Beer) featuring a most timely topic for the new year: meeting your financial goals. The event will be held on Jan. 17 from 6 to 8 p.m., featuring “Financial Swing Coach” Dawn Santoriello, at Backyard Ale House in Scranton. Not only will you gain valuable financial insight, the AAF will buy your first beer. Tickets are $8 for AAF members and $10 for non-members. Pre-register by Jan. 15 at http://aafnepa.org/news/events/.
That’s the scoop! Thanks for reading and I’ll meet you here again next week.
