Ear Full: KC and the Sunshine Band

Let the Sunshine in

KC and the Sunshine Band at Mt. Airy Casino and Resort

According to Harry Wayne Casey, better known as KC from KC and the Sunshine Band, disco is not dead; it’s bigger than it has ever been. KC delivered a fusion of R&B and funk with Latin influence groove more than 35 years ago, and is back on tour this summer. The Legendary party band will have you shaking your booty under the stars at Mount Airy Casino Resort in Mt. Pocono Friday, July 20. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. with show time at 9 p.m. This is a rain or shine event.
Best known for hits like “Get Down Tonight,” “That’s the Way (I Like It),” and “Shake Your Booty,” the band sold more than 100 million records, grabbed nine Grammy nominations, three Grammy Awards and an American Music Award. With a summer tour on the horizon as well as a new recording project (KC claims it’s some of the best work that he has ever done), the band is more than happy to be back performing their music in front of audiences.
“I think it’s great because we have been dismissed by so many critics,” KC said. “They almost convinced me that disco is a bad thing and it’s not. It’s here to stay and it’s not going to go away. It’s in everybody’s music on the radio today. I can’t help but think I kind of have the last laugh. Even though people try to tear it down and destroy it, it stood the test of time.”
Among all of the recognition, as well as a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, KC also feels the impact his music has on people is a very important accomplishment. “It’s rewarding when people come up to me and tell me how the music has gotten through a bad time or bad day. It puts it all into perspective. The music did a lot more than just play on the radio and make people dance. It actually did some good for people. I think those are the things I hang on to besides all of the awards.”
He is also looking forward to some upcoming action packed performances.
“It’s a high energy show,” KC said. “Everyone takes a part in the show, not only me, but the entire band. There are 15 members on stage including dancers and singers. I try to keep the integrity of the original sound of the songs as much as possible. I think that it’s important because people want to hear the songs as they were recorded and not some reconfiguration.”
After a short-lived retirement, KC feels he is back where he belongs; performing with the Sunshine Band and making people move their bodies. “I love what I’m doing. I’m doing things on my own terms now.”
