Ear Full: Grand Funk Railroad

Grand Funk Railroad parties down at Mt. Airy

Like the song says, they’re coming to your town to help you party down. “The American Band” Grand Funk Railroad is marking its 42-year milestone this summer. GFR will perform at Mount Airy Casino Resort, Mount Pocono, as part of its outdoor summer concert series Saturday, Aug. 18, at 9 p.m.
During their career, Grand Funk has had 19 charted singles, eight Top 40 hits and two Number One singles (“We’re An American Band” and “Locomotion”). The group has accumulated 13 gold and 10 platinum records with record sales in excess of 25 million copies sold worldwide.
Grand Funk Railroad includes original founding members Don Brewer (vocals and drums, writer and singer of the multi-million selling hit, “We’re An American Band”) and bassist Mel Schacher. Joining Don and Mel are singer Max Carl (38 Special), guitarist Bruce Kulick (KISS, Michael Bolton, Meatloaf and Billy Squier) and keyboardist Tim Cashion (Bob Seger and Robert Palmer).
“We’ve been doing this particular carnation of the band for 12 years,” Brewer said. “We do about 35 to 40 shows a year so it’s not a constant grind. It’s a great band and we have a great time. I love getting up in front of the audience and seeing the audience singing the songs.”
The band has witnessed a resurgence of interest in their music as of late with many younger fans making the trek to see classic rock bands.
“It’s amazing to see three generations of people out there and kids on their parents’ shoulders and grandparents and they all know the words to “Some Kind of Wonderful,” “I’m Your Captain,” and “We’re an American Band.” It’s truly inspiring for us when we’re on stage to see that. I really think it just shows what great music was created in that time period, in the late ’60s into the early ’70s.”
Brewer and the men of GFR know what the audience wants to hear and they’re more than willing to deliver the goods, and have a good time on stage.
“We do a few new songs in the show, but we know that people want to hear the hits,” Brewer said. “We make sure we do rock ‘n’ roll soul foot stompin music like “Shine On,” “Some Kind of Wonderful,” “I’m Your Captain,” “Closer to Home,” “We’re an American Band,” and “Inside Looking Out.” We know they want to hear the hits. It’s a high energy rock ‘n’ roll show. Grand Funk has always been that kind of a band. We come out there and want people on their feet and smiling and clapping and having a good time.”
