Dance for Hope

Music, dance, fun for a good cause, Feb. 15

A new event is coming to The 570 that promises to offer a fun night of music and dance to benefit a good cause.
Dance for Hope will be held on Friday, Feb. 15, at Platform Lounge, Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel. In honor of February as National Eating Disorders Awareness Month, Dance for Hope will raise funds for the National Eating Disorders Organization, a non-profit organization advocating on behalf of and supporting individuals and families affected by eating disorders. This organization is devoted to finding answers for the life-threatening diseases anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder.
The first event of its kind in northeastern Pennsylvania, organizer Rachel Pugh is hoping to open dialogue about the issues those who suffer from eating disorders face. It’s an issue she holds near and dear to her heart as someone who overcame an eating disorder in her youth. “It’s a serious cause, but I want people to have a good time while they’re learning about this disease,” Pugh said. “We’ll have resources available that explain what an eating disorder is, and how you can approach someone and get help if you feel that person is suffering from an eating disorder.”
Education about eating disorders is critical as many people who suffer from the disease feel shameful about it, when there’s no need to feel shameful; and it’s a subject people tend to shy away from discussing. “It’s the type of disease where words can make it much worse,” Pugh said. “It’s so delicate. Just saying one or two words can completely have a snowball effect. So I want to get the information out there that if you know somebody with this, your words are extremely important in helping this person.”
In addition to organizing the Dance for Hope, Pugh is partnering with the Greater Pittston YMCA to launch the area’s first local support group for those who suffer from eating disorders.
The dance will feature techno/house DJs DJ Ransom and DJ Hostyle with a special performance by Philly and Atlantic City DJ April Price. There will be a cash bar, and you can register to win raffle prizes from local businesses.
