SOCIAL NOTES & NEWS FROM YOUR FRIENDS IN THE 570

‘All are welcome. And we mean it.’
As we fluttered past the sign outside the Church of the Good Shepherd in Scranton’s Green Ridge section Friday night, we were all indeed welcomed — and welcomed in style.
A full house of 130 peeps from Lackawanna and Luzerne counties eagerly awaited the grand entrance of the area’s finest divas set to take center stage at Diva Divine, Alive & Kicking.
And was it ever!
Welcoming us with saucy Burlesque numbers, Ms. Diva Divine (Wally Kulick) and the spectacular cast (Darnell Armitage as Brown Suga, Luann Heckman, Dana Gulick, Keri Irace, Lori “Momma” Mundy, Rachael Jennings Hamburger, Cassandra Lee McGrade) wasted no time in warming up the crowd.
Throughout the evening, the lovely Mistress of Ceremonies Kylie Pimental kept the crowd in stitches in between numbers. (Yes, the Kylie the Sex Therapist (for entertainment purposes only) who dishes out relationship advice to local listeners on D-Rock Radio)! Nobody can rock a purple mini dress, hot pink boa and 9-inch, striped wedge shoes like you, girlfriend. OK — maybe they weren’t nine inches tall, but those shoes were killer, and she killed in them. More on the costumes later. For now, let’s get back to the Big Spender from the audience.
When Kylie plucked an unsuspecting “sophisticated man” out of his chair to join the divas on stage, we couldn’t wait to see what would happen next. “Who brought you here tonight?” she asked.
“My wife,” he said.
“Well forget her!”
Before he knew it, our Big Spender, and mighty good sport we might add, was surrounded by six fabulous ladies and Ms. Diva Divine, who was a little naughty when she kicked up her heels and landed her leg on our handsome gent’s shoulder … oh my!
These well-dressed divas truly understood the meaning of an interactive show. Dressed to impress, the costumes for this show blew our butterfly all the way from Green Ridge to Pittston and back. The drag queens and their gorgeous ginger-haired dancers really wowed us with numbers from famous Broadway musicals including Chicago and Gypsy. Their rendition of the Time Warp from The Rocky Horror Picture Show had the audience on their feet, and we be-bopped through our favorite number of the night, Cyndi Lauper’s Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. Does anyone know where Ms. Diva Divine found that amazing pink dress and sweet jean jacket? It took us right back to the ’80s, a time when our hair was big and our shoulder pads were bigger! Ah, the good old days…
Amidst a sea of sequins and to-die-for lashes, we spotted a number of familiar faces grooving the night away in the audience, including Shivaun O’Donnell; Melissa Mullaney and diamond city’s own Emily Santillo; and the Diva Theater’s Paige Balitski along with her pals, Sandi Graham and Lisa Becker Padula.
Once again, we were proud to flutter through a region so rich with talent. This cast and crew made us all want to kick up our heels and start dancing, and this show inspired unity; it brought people from all walks of life together, just as any artform should.
When all was said and done and the divas took their final bows, we offered kisses to the stars in the lobby and made our way up the sidewalk, past that sign outside the church once more: All are welcome. And we mean it.
Yes, indeed they did.
