On Saturday, downtown Scranton will welcome race fans from throughout the area for the Scranton Pocono 500 Fanfest.
Held on the 100 blocks of Penn and Wyoming Avenues and the adjacent portion of Lackawanna Avenue from noon to 9 p.m., the Fanfest will be a street carnival for race fans and families to enjoy the day before the Pocono 500 at Pocono Raceway on Sunday.
The Fanfest will feature display cars, driving simulators, quiz shows and live entertainment throughout the day. The day will wrap up with a free concert on the main stage by Asia featuring John Payne, giving fans a chance to hear "Heat of the Moment" and other great Asia hits.
Race fans throughout the 570 surely remember Berwick native Jimmy Spencer, who was known as "Mr. Excitement" during his career as one of NASCAR's stars. The two-time winner on NASCAR's top circuit will be on hand to receive a key to the city of Scranton as well as greet fans. Spencer, who is now an analyst for the SPEED Channel, will be accompanied by a camera crew throughout the day.
Admission to the Fanfest is free, although some attractions may charge a fee. All proceeds from the Fanfest will benefit the Children's Advocacy Center of Northeastern Pennsylvania and The NASCAR Foundation.
