Walking on the Food Side

After many other places, we dine at Januzzi's

Sit down, relax, take a load off. We're going to tell you a story now, a tale about the quest for satiation. Sure, eating is as simple as heading to one of the local fast food joints, and it's as quick as the drive through window is that day. But pushing processed foods to the incoming college class is like supporting the Freshman 15. And we don't want to do that.

We tried to go to Senunas', the local bar in the heart of King's College campus. We went for lunch on Saturday, only to find out it's not served then. We tried to go on Sunday, but the bar was closed. Monday for dinner sounded great, but you can only dine until 2 p.m., after that, you're looking at a liquid meal.

Knowing full well that Rodano's is moving down the block on Public Square, we tried the N. Main St. location just in case. As we suspected, it was closed. We went downtown to check out the new location, which was, of course, not open yet.

We stopped in the Bourbon Street Saloon, which had food, but the limited menu wasn't enough for us. We looked at Barnes & Noble's wrapped sandwiches when we overheard some college kids talking about food. "Do you wanna go to that Asian place? It's on my dad," one said.

That put Katana in our head, and we stopped by before realizing that the restaurant has most likely been featured in this column in the past.

So we decided on Januzzi's, which not too long ago moved from Academy Street in South Wilkes-Barre to a nice, new storefront next to R/C Movies 14. You would think it was just a pizza joint, but it's so much more. There are wraps, salads, and appetizers. When we looked at the incredibly affordable choices, we couldn't figure out why this wasn't the first place we headed to.

We decided on wraps ($4.95), one turkey club (with lettuce, bacon, onion, tomato, with blue cheese on the side) and one crispy chicken (with lettuce, tomato, bacon, onion, and chicken tenders, with honey mustard dressing on the side). We weren't sure if that would be enough food, so we ordered bread sticks ($2.95) and a Caesar salad ($3.95).

The salad came with dressing on the side. We keep mentioning that, but it was a nice touch. The containers always came with lids, which made the extra dressing simple to transport home. The salad had fresh, green romaine lettuce chopped in easy to eat pieces. There's not much messier than trying to eat a huge leaf of lettuce and having dressing fly all over the place.

The salad came with a generous helping of croutons and parmesan - and the salad itself was gigantic. For two dollars more, you could add chicken, and that would be more than enough for a meal.

Just after the salad made its debut, the hot, parmesan topped breadsticks with accompanying marinara sauce were brought over. The breadsticks were warm and doughy inside, and the sauce was a perfect accompaniment.

Our wraps came, and we were excited about the turkey, which was slightly flavored, and not slimy like cheap turkey meat can be. The tomatoes were chopped finely and not messy at all.

We dove into our crispy chicken wrap and noticed a few things - the chicken was marinated and grilled, the bacon and tomatoes were missing, and the lettuce was romaine, not iceberg. We were not eating a crispy chicken wrap on garlic and herb, but, rather, a chicken Caesar wrap. That went along with the way things had been going for this food review. But, luckily, the marinated chicken was soft and delicious, and we could afford to take a break from bacon every now and again (especially since we heard a rumor that each slice takes seven minutes off your life).

We ate half of each wrap, saving the other half (and what appeared to be most of the salad) for another day. We didn't see any dessert on Januzzi's menu, and that's just as well. We didn't have anywhere to fit in anyway.
