Knife, saw, and sickle. Chisel, rake and wrench. Hammer, axe and pliers. Most of our tools have existed for so many centuries that we take their simple ingenuity for granted. When your daily sustenance depends on the use of those tools, however, a perspective more reverent is in order. While building a business on the inspiration a good hardware store can ignite. hardware industry pioneer John Hechinger, Sr. lined the walls of his corporate headquarters with imaginative odes to tools. Among the more than 370 works by 225 20th century artists are sculptures, photographs, paintings and mixed media pieces celebrating the beauty of tools themselves as well as the wonder of the work they do. A traveling exhibition titled Tools in Motion: Work from the Hechinger Collection brings 49 of these pieces by the likes of Berenice Abbott, Arman, Jim Dine, Richard Estes, Walker Evans, Claes Oldenburg, and Wayne Thiebaud to the Everhart Museum for display Friday through the end of the year.
