Family dysfunction and the Southern lifestyle are two things that are routinely used by comedians, writers and other entertainers to gain a laugh. Throw in a funeral and playwrights David Botrell and Jesse Jones have struck comedy gold with Dearly Departed. The story of Bud Turpin’s funeral and the familial hilarity that ensues – money problems, marital flings, and macaroni and meat loaf surprise are some of the factors – is filled with knee-slapping moments that often have theatre goers holding their sides after bouts of laughter. Directed by Marilyn Rau, Dearly Departed will be presented by the Actors Circle at the Providence Playhouse in Scranton beginning with a preview performance Thursday at 8 p.m. Tickets for the preview are $6-8. Regular shows run Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m., Sunday at 2 p.m., May 23 and 24 at 8 p.m., and May 25 at 2 p.m. Tickets for regular showings are $8-12.
