1974: Bandleader and composer Duke Ellington died of lung cancer at the age of 75.
1980: Singer Ian Curtis of the new wave band Joy Division was found dead, apparently having hanged himself. He was 23.
1989: Actress-comedian Gilda Radner died of ovarian cancer in Los Angeles. She was 42.
1990: Axl Rose of Guns N' Roses and Erin Everly, Don Everly's daughter, filed for divorce. They were married 27 days.
1993: The final episode of "Cheers" was broadcast on NBC.
1998: The last episode of "Murphy Brown" aired on CBS.
1999: The movie "Star Wars: Episode One _ The Phantom Menace" opened nationwide.
