When was the last time you had three to nine days to complete a project? In the world of batik, it can take just that long to create one piece.
Some experts believe that the Indonesian art form of batik was reserved for the country’s royal families, but you don’t have to be royalty to enjoy the featured Bosom Batik exhibit this Friday June 19 at Arts YOUniverse.
Batik is a wax-resist dyeing technique used on textiles or fabrics. Melted wax is spread on a cloth using a small wax pen with a thin spout (also called a canting) before it is dipped in a dye bath. The process is extremely time consuming and doesn’t allow for many mistakes. Traditionally, batik designs were mostly limited to natural colors like beige, blue and black, but modern day designs utilize colors from across the spectrum. Modern designs also incorporate patterns that may include flowers, birds and nature scenes. Some designs are associated with particular festivals or religious ceremonies.
The display is a part of Arts YOUniverse’s Third Friday celebration, and will feature batik designs on silk. It’s free and open to the public.
All proceeds from the sale of artwork will benefit the Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk in Philadelphia that is scheduled for mid-October. The walk is a 60-mile journey through the city of Philadelphia, and 85 percent of the profits will go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Arts YOUniverse is located at 47 N. Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre. For more information, you can visit www.ArtsYOUniverse.com.
